Big Moves Don’t Matter Without Small Systems

February 01, 20263 min read

Every week, I notice there’s usually a theme that shows up across my coaching calls, group sessions, and even my personal life. This week’s theme surprised me a little:

People will take on the big, scary actions… but hesitate on the small, simple ones that actually create momentum.

And I’m including myself in that observation, too.

Big Moves vs. Small Moves

In a few of my one-to-one coaching conversations this week, I saw people making huge decisions — the kind that change the direction of their business or life. Courageous conversations. Strategic shifts. Agreements that had been delayed for months are finally getting handled.

At the same time, the “tiny” tasks — the 10-minute setup, the simple tracking list, the quick follow-up system — were the things getting postponed.

It made me smile a little because it’s so human.

We’ll climb a mountain… but avoid tidying the desk. We’ll deliver a presentation… but delay organizing the contact list.

And yet those small systems are often what keep the mountain climb sustainable.

In the Group Space – Culture in Progress

My group coaching community is in that interesting middle stage where culture is still forming. It’s a bit like moving into a new house — everyone is figuring out where the furniture goes and what the house rules are.

What I’m noticing is a gentle reminder for all of us (again, myself included):

Relationships come before transactions. People like to work with people they feel comfortable with, not people they just met five seconds ago.

This isn’t about selling less. It’s about connecting first, then inviting.

Community takes time. Trust takes time. And that’s okay.

The Value of Time and Energy

I also had a moment this week where I reflected on how much time and heart goes into running communities and coaching spaces. When something is offered freely or generously, it can sometimes be easy for others — and even for ourselves — to forget the real investment behind the scenes.

It reminded me that generosity and boundaries are not opposites. They actually need each other.

Sustainable support requires structure. Otherwise, the support eventually runs out of steam.

A Weekend Reflection – Leadership Beyond Business

This weekend I attended a ladies’ retreat, and listening to different life stories stirred a lot of reflection for me. What struck me most wasn’t any single story, but the reminder that emotional leadership matters just as much as financial or professional leadership.

We are all learning as we go. We all miss signs sometimes. We all grow through experiences we never planned to have.

What I walked away with wasn’t judgment — it was compassion mixed with determination. A reminder that strong communities, honest conversations, and good role models make a difference. None of us arrives fully equipped; we build awareness over time.

The Theme I’m Taking Forward

If I had to sum up this week in one sentence, it would be:

Small, consistent choices create the stability that big decisions depend on.

Not perfection. Not speed. Just steady, intentional actions.

  • The quick note that keeps you organized

  • The follow-up message you almost skipped

  • The boundary you gently hold

  • The introduction that helps someone move forward

  • The five minutes spent planning instead of reacting

Those little hinges really do swing big doors.

What I’m Learning (and Re-Learning)

  • Structure often feels harder than effort, but it pays off more.

  • Culture doesn’t “just happen” — it grows from what we encourage and what we model.

  • Connection builds trust faster than promotion ever will.

  • Boundaries protect generosity rather than limit it.

  • Emotional awareness is a leadership skill, not a personality trait.

  • Tiny habits quietly shape big outcomes.

Mostly, I’m reminded that growth isn’t loud. It’s usually quiet, repetitive, and sometimes invisible — until one day you realize things are working better than they used to.

And that’s the kind of progress I love seeing in the room.

Until next week!

Penny
