The moment the room started teaching itself
There’s a moment in every facilitator’s journey when you realize: This isn’t about me performing anymore — it’s about the room coming alive.
That moment happened for me last week.
We wrapped the last 2025 Think Bigger Friday session with a guest speaker Andrew Sperring MInstLM, and something shifted. Not in a loud, flashy way — but in the kind that tells you you’re on the right path.
Seventeen people showed up. Seventeen different stories, businesses, personalities, and levels of confidence.
And the room worked.
The Opening That Set the Tone
I opened with one simple line:
“It only takes one word, one idea, or one person to change the direction of your life — and they might be in the room today.”
You could feel the shift. People leaned in. Cameras came on. Energy changed.
That’s the power of intentional facilitation — not hype, not pressure, just presence.
What Worked (and Why It Matters)
Here’s what I noticed — and what I want other facilitators to learn from:
1. Structure creates safety. People engage more when they know where they’re going. Clear opening, clear purpose, clear close.
2. Participation beats perfection. The magic didn’t come from polished slides — it came from people speaking, reflecting, and connecting.
3. The facilitator sets the altitude. As one mentor told me afterward: “You stayed in control. You held the room.” That’s not about dominance — it’s about stewardship.
4. The room teaches the room. Some of the best insights came from participants responding to each other, not me. That’s when you know you’ve built something real.
5. Growth happens in real time. I could feel myself getting better — more grounded, more fluid, more confident. That’s the gift of doing the work live, not waiting to be “ready.”
What I’m Learning as a Facilitator
This work isn’t about being the smartest person in the room.
It’s about:
Creating safety for people to speak
Asking better questions instead of giving better answers
Designing experiences where people discover their own insights
And yes — it’s about learning in public.
I’m still refining how I structure breakouts. Still experimenting with pacing. Still learning how to draw quieter voices forward.
And I’m sharing that process intentionally — so newer facilitators can see what growth actually looks like.
For You, If You’re Building Something…
Whether you’re a leader, coach, facilitator, or business owner:
Your voice matters before it’s perfect
Your community grows when you invite participation, not performance
The room doesn’t need you to be flawless — it needs you to be present
Sometimes the biggest breakthrough isn’t a strategy. It’s realizing you’re already doing the work — and doing it well.
And if you ever wonder whether what you’re building matters…
Just remember: One conversation can change a trajectory.
And sometimes, that conversation starts with you saying,
"Let’s begin."
